Students in first grade are working writing complete sentences that have beginning capitalization and ending punctuation.
One of my ELA centers was pulling sticks with spelling words on them and then writing a complete sentence with correct capitalization and punctuation. They had a poster to remind them at the center. They were able to use this rubric afterwards to see how they were doing with their goal.
The problem with written rubrics in first grade is that some students lack the ability to read the rubric. There are some solutions- have it read to them electronically or use more pictures. I really like the students to self-assess. I can also use the rubric to assess them.
